ExCel is a sporting venue that needs no introductions. ExCel is located on the north of the Royal Victoria Docks in London Docklands. Nestled between London City Airport and the famous Canary Wharf, the name of the venue is actually an abbreviation for Exhibition Center.

This exhibition and conference center was built by Sir Robert McAlpine. It was opened to public in November 2000 and only after eight years of its inauguration; it was acquired by The Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Company. The company took the project ahead and completed its phase II successfully by 1st May, 2012. The expansion of the project was aimed at increasing the capacity to further incorporate meeting space as well as other banqueting facilities.

Showcasing striking waterfront views, the ExCel is believed to cover an area of 100 acres. ExCel features two halls that are column-free and rectangular in shape. These halls cover an area of 479, 493 square feet including several catering facilities in addition to the information points. While one may find it hard to believe, ExCel can accommodate anywhere from 6000 to 10’000 spectators.

ExCel Function Room Features


There are three sets of function rooms that are a part of the project and they are used for organizing smaller seminars

, meetings, presentations etc. What makes ExCel a remarkable site for the Olympic events is the fact that there are 6 hotels and more than 30 bars and restaurants that one can find here. Furthermore, parking is available in abundance. In fact, the campus can park up to 3700 vehicles at the same time.

This summer at the London 2012 Olympic Games, because of the endless perks it has to offer, ExCel is going to stage 165 events of a variety of sports. The sports whose events will be staged here includes Fencing, Table Tennis, Weight Lifting, Boccia, the Paralympics Judo, Sitting Volleyball, Boxing, Judo, Taekwondo, the Wrestling, the Paralympics Table Tennis,the  Paralympics Power lifting as well as Wheel Chair Fencing.

Most Versatile Conference Center

Being the most versatile exhibition and conference center, ExCel has hosted countless public and private, consumer and trade related events. The range of events staged here span a diversity of conferences, concerts, exhibitions, weddings and religious events since the day it was opened in 2000. Among the most famous events that have acquired the honor of being hosted here are London the Boat Show, the World skills London 2011, the Grand Designs Live, The MCM Expo, The Star Wars Celebration Europe, the World Travel Market, The Dive Show, London Wine And Spirits Fair, London International Music show and the list goes on and on.

Since so many of the most celebrated sporting events will be organized here, it goes without saying that ExCel is going to be the center of attraction this summer while the gala will be in full swing. What further draws audience to this site is the ease it provides in terms of conveyance. Docklands Light Railway is in close proximity of the venue which makes it all the more easy to get here from both Central London and Olympic Park.
